Text Box: UNITS OF STUDY:
American History
1860s - 1960s
Text Box: Course Objective: This course traces the development of the United States from the Civil War to modern America. Attention will be given to the struggle between the forces of unity and sectionalism that reached its climax during the Civil War. Emphasis is placed on the historical origins of contemporary problems: urbanization, distribution of economic and political power, and involvement in world affairs. The problem of adapting and preserving traditional ideals under modern conditions is investigated. Student learning will focus on six principal themes of historical inquiry: conflict, geography, religion and beliefs, economics and trade, arts and sciences, and government.

All New London High School sophomores will study American History from the Civil War through the 1960s. Students will be asked to develop chronological perspectives and the ability to see history from multiple points of view. Further, students will be asked to evaluate sources for credibility and to distinguish fact from opinion in the quest to create an understanding of the American past. Students will be asked to defend their perspectives and understandings in the form of persuasive essays given throughout the units. Students will develop a thesis from primary and secondary sources, defend opinions with evidence and use support from the text in responses. These essays will form the basis for CAPT instruction in the sophomore year. Further, we will continue to focus on Reading for Information, identifying points of view, author’s purpose and main ideas in the sources we read.

The goal of this course is two-fold: To form an appreciation of the course of American history and to foster the development of skills to promote independence and life-long learning in all of our students.
